Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions
What
should I wear to practice?
Wear shorts that tie so they are not pulled off during practice, and a
T-shirt. Do not wear clothes that are oversized or baggy, or any
clothing with zippers or metal rivets that can catch on clothing, skin
or wrestling mats. No jewelry is permitted during practice or any
tournaments. Headgear is recommended.
Do I need
to buy wrestling shoes?
I advise investing in wrestling shoes to help your wrestler
compete. It will provide him with better traction than socks, and
they will allow him to make some of the moves he will need to make
where other types of shoes will stick to the mat and not allow him to
move. Wrestlers must carry in the shoes they are going to use to
wrestle to keep contaminants off the mat.
What other
uniform/clothing requirements are there?
Headgear is recommended at practice and at all tournaments.
Singlets are available for use in tournament competition. All
singlets must be turned in at the end of tournament competition for
laundry prior to the next competition.
Where can
I buy wrestling gear?
Equipment can be purchased from Circle of Champions located in the Winn
Dixie shopping plaza on the southwest corner of Babcock St. and Port
Malabar Blvd. They also have a website, www.circleofchampionssports.com.
What is an
AAU card?
This provides the wrestler with insurance and is the venue in which we
will compete. AAU card must be an AB membership.
Tournaments
Where are
tournaments located?
Throughout Florida. However, most of the tournaments that we
participate in are located in Brevard County at such locations as
Astronaut High School in Titusville, Bayside High School in Palm Bay
and Palm Bay High School in Palm Bay.
What time
will I have to be there?
Weigh-in usually runs from 8-9 am. Make sure you arrive on
time. Specific times will be announced to all wrestlers and
parents. Parents and wrestlers usually meet at Melbourne High
School and drive to the meets together.
What do I
do when I get there?
Fill out an entry form (they’ll be near the door). Make sure you
list your club as WMYWA. Coaches are usually there very early, so
see them if you have any questions. After you register and pay
your entry fee, you will go to the scale and weigh in.
How much
will it cost?
$7 per event, and remember to bring your AAU card.
What time
will I wrestle?
Wrestling usually begins at 10 am. Normally, we begin with the
youngest and lightest wrestlers and work our way up. This format
is not always followed, so make sure you’re ready to wrestle by 9:45.
What
should I wear?
Singlets are preferred. Club singlets are available on a limited
basis.
Is there
anything to eat?
There is usually a small concession stand at tournaments. Choices
are usually limited to soft drinks, sports drinks, water, pizza, hot
dogs and candy.
How long
will I be there?
That depends on how many kids are in your weight class and how well you
do. Plan on being there most of the day. Usually, if you
lose twice, you are finished for the day, and may go home. Once
in a while, a wrestler will have to wrestler a tiebreaker, even if he’s
lost two matches. DO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT CHECKING WITH THE COACHES.
Do I get
anything if I win?
Medals are usually awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places (gold, silver
and bronze). If we have a strong showing, we may go home with a
team trophy.
What
should I bring with me?
Your normal wrestling gear (singlet, wrestling shoes, head gear,
etc.). You’ll probably be there for several hours, so bring
something to occupy your time (books, playing cards, gameboys, cd
players, etc.). Just remember to keep an eye on your stuff.
What
should parents bring with them?
Patience and Tylenol. Seating is usually limited to bleachers,
and it gets very noisy in the gym.
